Fishing With Dynamite

NORTH BEND, Wash. — People in North Bend are on high alert, searching for a zebra on the loose. On a cold, windy February morning on Shinnecock Bay, on the South Fork of Long Island, N.Y., Ricky Sea Smoke fished for clams from the back of his 24-foot boat. The fisherman, whose real name is Rick Stevens, expertly sorted through haul after haul as they were dumped onto the sorting rack. Duroc Pork Chop basted with Clark’s special barbecue sauce.

But these people have set out to get it into stores and restaurants. Crispy fried and served with homemade vodka sauce. Lightly breaded fried shrimp tossed in homemade fire sauce. In a Nov. 22, 2023 warning letter (released to the public in 2024), the FDA described a July 10-25, 2023, inspection of Euro USA Inc.’s seafood processing facility in Cleveland, OH. Still, Clark said they do not want people trespassing on private property to search for the zebra. He is fearful that too many people will overwhelm the zebra and cause him to bolt farther away.

Every corner of Los Angeles serves pristine seafood thanks to the bountiful fish markets that supply Southland restaurants.

The firm’s written response indicated that employees were trained on the importance of performing necessary corrective actions; however, they failed to provide evidence that employee training was performed. Failure of a processor of fish or fishery products to have and implement an HACCP plan that complies with regulation renders the fish or fishery products adulterated. Accordingly, the firm’s fish and fishery products are adulterated, in that they have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have been rendered injurious to health. The receiving CCP for their Scombroid fish HACCP plan, lists a critical limit that is not adequate to control histamine formation. The critical limit indicates they may receive scombroid fish with gel packs. If so, FDA recommends internal temperatures of a representative number of fish be taken at receiving. Their written response indicated that they are revising their HACCP plans to reflect the correct CCP, and seafood staff have been trained on new procedures. FDA finds their response inadequate in that they did not provide evidence/documentation to demonstrate their corrective actions or that employee training was performed. The firm must take appropriate corrective actions when a deviation from a critical limit occurs, to comply.

Sheridan is also co-owner of the city's Locale BBQ Post and Wilmington Pickling Company and Snowberger's day job is vice president of development for The Buccini/Pollin Group, owner of the building at 829 N. Since he was toying with a new set-up, it took longer than expected. And by halftime, Rutherford was speeding north in a rainstorm to his Philadelphia home to see his beloved Eagles win their first Super Bowl. Sheridan hopes at least five or six beers will serve as the restaurant’s staples, and then plans to roll others out seasonally. Crowlers—32-ounce cans of beer produced on the premises—as well as growlers are also available to go. And that's exactly what BPG wants to keep younger residents moving to downtown to fill their still-growing roster of apartment buildings that dot downtown.

Stitch House Brewery is a craft brewery that’s located at 829 North Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware. Most of the beers we sampled weighed in at about 7.5 percent ABV—high enough to expedite your trip to buzzville, though not high enough to send you to bed early. (Styles like the Belgian tripel, at 11 percent, are exceptions, of course.) We hit half the taps, and they change regularly. A check-in a few weeks later revealed a saison, an American pale, a maibock and others, so beer explorers will have reasons for frequent visits.

Which is more important to the drinking public than all the boosterism. And though Stitch House is a brewery, it appeals to drinkers of all stripes through a small, surprisingly cosmopolitan list of mid-priced wines and a handful of signature cocktails mixed with craft spirits. It’s been more than 20 years since the first breweries and brewpubs opened in Delaware, and we now count at least 20, with one more on the way, so its seems almost no big deal when another opens.

But when a brewpub sets up in the commercial heart of downtown Wilmington—the first since the city’s last production brewery closed more than 60 years ago—it is a very big deal, indeed. Following a soft opening this weekend during Wilmington's St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the highly anticipated Stitch House Brewery opened today at 829 Market Street. Located almost directly across from The Grand, the brewery will start out by serving lunch from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Your guide to the people, places and activities of Delaware from its beaches and coastal towns to its bustling cities and historic sites.

“A lot of these are flavors he has wanted to do for years.” Like the Big Stitch Nick, a pale ale named after Eagles quarterback Nick Foles that Rutherford brewed on Super Bowl Sunday. While the craft beer boom has sprouted breweries of all sizes from Greenville to Delmar, it has left downtown Wilmington untouched over the past 15 years. With cheeky names like Big Stitch Nick (their pale ale), we love the opportunity to sample whatever we like with their beer flights and that the restaurant offers plenty of space for groups. Fried bologna on a brioche gets a boost from a beer cheese sauce and pickles from another of Sheridan’s concerns (with popular Locale BBQ Post in Wilmington’s Little Italy, which means Sheridan employs his smoking expertise on some of the meats served at Stitch). A BLT is made with fried green tomatoes and a peppercorn aioli on sourdough. On a recent visit, we enjoyed a straightforward rare roast beef on sourdough with pickled onions, sharp cheddar and horseradish aioli, as well as the The B.L.A.P. of bacon, lettuce, avocado and peppery cheese spread. And though the handful of chips in the nacho skillet was underwhelming, the skillet of hot crab dip was a fine start. The weekend brunch menu offers even more skillet choices, like an egg enchilada. Stitch House snagged brewer Andrew Rutherford, formerly of Philadelphia’s Yards Brewing Co. “The flavors are all Andrew,” Sheridan says.

"We don't want people to guess if we're going to be open," says Daniel Sheridan, 35, who co-owns the vibrant 160-seat spot with fellow Wilmington native Rob Snowberger. "It might be a little rough some nights, but I think it's better to be known as a place you know will be open." With a 30-foot bar with a zinc top, communal restaurant tables, plenty of TVs and an approachable sandwich-and-skillet menu, Stitch is gunning to be a major player at night with a promise to stay open until 1 a.m.

Wilmington returns to ‘power of the people’ mentality to help tell its story

Finally Market Street, and the 1st State, presents history in the making. It appeals to diners, too, with a menu of sandwiches and so-called skillets. They include cold fare such as salads served in miniature versions of the pan, as well as appetizers and hot meals.

It was February 2016 when Chelsea Tavern and Ernest & Scott Taproom owner  Scott Morrison died at the age of 54. Following a soft opening this weekend during Wilmington’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the highly anticipated Stitch House Brewery opened today at 829 Market Street. "This is no longer really a BPG project -- they are our landlords," says Sheridan, also a chef who has cooked at local restaurants such as Cantwell's Tavern, Hotel du Pont, Big Fish, La Fia and more over the years. The city had long been the state's brewing center thanks to breweries such as Hartmann & Fehrenbach, which opened in the 1860s, along with others such as the Joseph Stoeckle Brewing Company, Diamond State Brewery and Bavarian Brewery. Customers will also be able to take out growlers and smaller crowlers of beer. In terms of the beer, they're still naming the brews they have already made. But among the first class of Stitch House beers to be available, there will be a lager, IPA, pilsner and stout, along with both a Belgian farmhouse and Belgian gold.

That’s not bad for a workday lunch, terrific for a dinner. For months, the faces of curious passersby have been pressed against the glass looking inside as craft beer fans eagerly await what will be only the second downtown Wilmington brewery in more than six decades. For years, small and independent U.S. craft breweries have been turning the beer world upside down. Their ability to take risks, innovate flavors and build better communities has made the U.S. the craft beer capital of the world.

With a pair of owners in their mid-30s, Sheridan thinks they know what the younger, nightlife-seeking crowds want. They're confident that their quick, in-and-out lunches will do well thanks to downtown's hungry army of workers and they plan on hosting happy hours to bring people back for a drink or dinner. Plus, Stitch already has a few office parties already booked. When the final alcohol permits and brewing equipment arrived at the new Stitch House Brewery in downtown Wilmington, head brewer Andrew Rutherford didn't waste any time getting to know his new system. Stitch House Brewery is an independent craft brewer.

Nothing keeps people out at night like great places to drink. Almost two years in the making, the brewery is finally serving up sandwiches, shareable tapas and—obviously—lots of beer. "We are the actual demographic and when my friends get off work, they don't necessarily want to sit down for a full meal. You want to be lounging with food on the cheaper side," Sheridan says. "Even though this space is beautiful, the aim is not to get lost pretentiousness. We want to be a hangout."

The opening of Stitch will come two years after the death of the man who was supposed to be the one opening a brewery at the location. The arrival of Stitch on Market Street is actually a small piece of Delaware beer history in the making. The airy 7,000-square-foot space gives Market Street a taste of what it desperately needs -- casual hang-outs for young professionals like the popular spots they regularly visit in Trolley Square and other areas of the city. The far-reaching, grassroots campaign will tell residents' stories and highlight the efforts of those who aim to make the city a better place through video... Take a glimpse into the lives of your neighbors!

Market Street, in Wilmington, is packed with bars, restaurants, entertainment venues, and shops. If you’re looking for a fun place to spend the day with family or catch up with friends, this is the top spot! While there are dozens of restaurants all up and down the street, one spot stands out for those looking for delicious handhelds and creative craft beers. To proudly display that independent spirit, the Brewers Association created a symbol to unify U.S. craft breweries and those who want to support them. This certified mark gives beer lovers an easy way to identify independent craft beer.

And that's exactly what BPG wants to keep younger residents moving to downtown to fill their still-growing roster of apartment buildings that dot downtown.

Discovery Guide

"We don't want people to guess if we're going to be open," says Daniel Sheridan, 35, who co-owns the vibrant 160-seat spot with fellow Wilmington native Rob Snowberger. "It might be a little rough some nights, but I think it's better to be known as a place you know will be open." With a 30-foot bar with a zinc top, communal restaurant tables, plenty of TVs and an approachable sandwich-and-skillet menu, Stitch is gunning to be a major player at night with a promise to stay open until 1 a.m.

Coming soon: Downtown Wilmington's only brewery

The visit is expected to take place with little fanfare behind closed doors, as the White House aims to respect the privacy of grieving families and avoid the appearance of using their grief for political purposes. For their families...it's just crazy."

Monterey County housing plan falls short on affordable housing

monterey chart house

Esther Malkin, a housing advocate and founder of Monterey County Renters United, said the housing crisis has been decades in the making. Adequate housing will affect the ability of the county to retain critical professions and supply the labor force the county needs to be sustainable.

Monterey County housing plan falls short on…

The housing element also requires jurisdictions to analyze their communities’ specific constraints and challenges, and commit to time-bound specific programs to remove those barriers, address challenges and encourage their full RHNA to be built. Local governments must demonstrate sufficient capacity to accommodate the RHNA allocation within the sites inventory in the housing element with zoning to follow as needed,” she wrote. The housing element of the general plan is critical at a time when the county and the entire state is facing a housing crisis. Housing costs – both rental and home ownership – are increasingly out of reach for the majority of residents in the county. The median listing price for homes in Monterey County now stands at $1.2 million, according to Realtor.com. The update was provided to the Board of Supervisors by staff from the county Housing and Community Development Department, including the county Planning Department, as part of a General Plan update that includes a housing element.

Residents

The details the state wants to see are time consuming to generate, while at the same time the county needs to navigate new state laws that hit the books relating to housing. Malkin said there are an increasing number of bills in the state Legislature that would get tougher with jurisdictions in meeting housing demand for all income levels. She sees the way out of the crisis through public-private partnerships with nonprofit builders such as Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association and Mid-Pen Housing. In a statement provided to the Monterey Herald, Alicia Murillo with the state Department Housing and Community Development, said California requires that local governments plan to meet the housing needs of everyone in the community.

Also, courts have authority to take away local government residential and nonresidential permit authority to bring the jurisdiction’s General Plan and housing element into compliance with state law. RHNA numbers set 650 as the above-moderate income housing goal during the cycle, but there 1,448 building permits issued in that income category. The state provides oversight of those opportunities with a system called Regional Housing Need Allocation. But the first step is for the county to provide the land and zoning that would allow for affordable housing to be built, Malkin said. But housing advocates argue that leaving affordable housing up to for-profit developers is like leaving the fox to guard the henhouse. For example, the RHNA numbers assigned to Monterey County by the state over the most recent eight-year RHNA timeframe, designated as the 5th Housing Element Cycle, includes housing for very low-income residents.

Housing

The county is targeting the first week in May to have a draft housing element completed. If a jurisdiction’s housing element continues to be found out of compliance, courts can fine jurisdictions up to $100,000 per month, and if they are not paid, multiply that by a factor of six. One of the criticisms leveled at the county is that the housing element should have been filed with the state months ago. Craig Spencer, the director of the county Housing and Community Development Department, explained that pulling together a housing element is extremely complicated.

Senate passes $95B foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan: What's next?

house three thirty

House Three Thirty will be a place for people to visit who are coming to town for special events, she said. It’s also for Akronites who used to frequent the Tangier, which for decades hosted live shows, banquets and special events. The entrance to House Three Thirty will be something to see when it’s ablaze with neon signs representing every business that partners with the foundation, Campbell said. On Wednesday, known as 330 Day in Akron, the foundation opened the doors of House Three Thirty for the first time, allowing the community to take a look inside the former Tangier Restaurant & Cabaret.

Akron gets a first look at LeBron James' 'House Three Thirty'

The more revenue that comes in, the more support services the foundation can bring to Akron, she said. Reedy, with the LeBron James Family Foundation, led a tour of the building showing plenty of new amenities and artwork featuring James. They included a commercial kitchen that will serve as a learning space and a resource room for employees to get toiletries and other essentials to help them come to work ready.

When is the LeBron James' Home Court museum open?

Campbell said the House Three Thirty is still a work in progress − even though most of the renovations of much of the public space is complete. Speaker Mike Johnson's position on Ukraine aid evolved from also requiring changes to border and immigration policy to working with Democrats to pass the latest bills. "They are now being out shot by the Russian side five to one. So Russians fire five times as many artillery shells at the Ukrainians then the Ukrainians are able to fire back," U.S. European Command's Gen. Christopher Cavoli told the House Armed Services Committee. "That will immediately go to 10 to one in a matter of weeks. We're not talking about months."

Many of the new stores and facilities are named after corporate sponsors, like Smucker’s, Old El Paso and PepsiCo. Fellow employee Sundae Davenport, a mother of a former I Promise student who now attends Kent State University, noted I Promise families get a lot of support outside of the school building. For example, they were the first to hear about the new jobs at House Three Thirty. For business meetings and special events, the private club The Den by MainStreet Advisors and Lobos 1707 will be available.

House Three Thirty is designed for job training, family financial health programs, tourism, and a safe place to learn. "I'm really proud of this venture, especially because it opens the doors to so many opportunities for our community — job training, employment, [Chase] bank being here and helping our community with their banking needs," she said. "Then a huge ball area where lifelong memories can be made like weddings and receptions and birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and all that goes with that." By June, the hope is to open LeBron James’ Home Court — a museum taking fans through his life and career — along with the full-time opening of the retail shop and a sweets shop selling local ice cream and candy.

They are often invited to Akron, so with the opening of House Three Thirty, they’ll be able to see I Promise philosophies in action. Along the way, Reedy and Campbell said, more employees will be brought on and trained to operate the various facilities.

LeBron James Family Foundation: House Three Thirty opens to the public on Akron’s 330 Day

"It's not every day you can say you made the world truly a better place but I think the Senate can say that tonight and I am very proud of what has happened," Schumer said. The package provides roughly $26 billion for Israel, currently at war with Hamas in Gaza; as well as $61 billion for Ukraine and $8 billion for allies in the Indo-Pacific. A fourth bill would force a U.S. ban of TikTok if its Chinese parent company doesn't sell it; impose sanctions on Russia, China and Iran; and seize Russian assets to help Ukraine rebuild from the war's damage. Highland Square resident Barbara Kemper and friend Cheryl Renick took in the new space from its sitting area near Starbucks. McGee shares that pride and hopes that the new facility, coupled with the nearby I Promise School, I Promise Village and soon to be HealthQuarters, will have a substantial impact on the Akron community.

The large bar will have windows and a loft, and plenty of TVs for people to gather with friends to watch sporting events. House Three Thirty is the latest community effort by James' foundation which started with the I PROMISE school in 2018, a partnership with Akron Public Schools. The school offers resources, access to opportunities, skill development, and wraparound services for more than 1,300 students. All proceeds from ticket sales support House Three Thirty’s job training model, which employs I PROMISE students, parents, educators and family members in the community. "We designed House Three Thirty to create opportunities and open doors to show them that anything is possible, and that they can do it right here in Akron," he said. "We believe House Three Thirty will be a staple for our city, and we can't wait for people to come and experience it."

House Three Thirty also will be home to a yet-to-be named community-model coffee shop. And work was recently completed on The Taco Shop by Old El Paso that hosted a Taco Tuesday event for I Promise kids and their families. And this March 30 will offer the first chance for Akronites to venture inside the former Tangier since the LeBron James Family Foundation has taken over the iconic entertainment complex.

Part of the foundation's goal with House Three Thirty is to offer retail and restaurants for the public to visit while offering job training and employment opportunities for partner families. Part of the layered approach with the job training, she said, is to take things slow and every employee learns all aspects of the operationm from cleaning to working in the retail shop to food prep in the kitchen to making drinks in the Starbucks. The foundation’s longest running partner, JP Morgan Chase, will also be open on Thursday offering financial planning assistance for I Promise families and community members, the foundation said. The center — with an open house tomorrow on Akron’s annual 330 day (the day the calendar coincides with the area code) — aims to provide job training to Akron families, along with creating an economic engine that will benefit the foundation and the city. Dick’s Sporting Goods will helped the foundation turn the top of the Tangier parking garage into a youth sports complex; preliminary plans call for three basketball courts, a soccer field, and other recreation space. In the former Tangier fountain room will be the only LeBron James-themed sports bar in the world, Campbell said.

Jennifer and Jim Cauffield are regulars at the center, and on Saturday, brought their daughter and grandson to the festivities. Jennifer said she enjoys bringing friends to House Three Thirty for a slice of pizza or ice cream, and to enjoy performances. The multimedia storytelling experience is based on James’ life, and will feature never-before-seen items, the foundation said. The training facility is designed to blend the supportive “We Are Family” energy that forms the basis of the LJFF I Promise philosophy with real-world opportunities that can change lives, the foundation said. AKRON, Ohio — The LeBron James Family Foundation’s House Three Thirty opened to the public Thursday, March 30, Akron’s 330 Day, offering the community an opportunity to see and experience a unique workforce development facility. The multi-use community space offers several amenities for local residents, fans and I PROMISE families.

“A lot of our research when we started was sitting and, honestly, talking to LeBron and [his mom] Gloria, ‘What would have helped you growing up in Akron? ’ So that has extended to our families and what would they want to see,” Campbell said. “My dream was always to put Akron on the map, so to have a place in my hometown that allows me to share my journey with my fans from all over the world means a lot to me,” said James in a statement. Campbell said the facility, outside of providing job training and support for families’ financial wellbeing, is meant to generate further revenue for the foundation so that it can continue its work in Akron. That could mean “hundreds” of employees eventually staffing the building to generate further economic opportunity for residents. A cabaret and theater, which will provide a space for I Promise School performances. A large “town hall” available for rent for weddings and other events and a sports bar bearing LeBron James’ name.

Instead of simply focusing on what makes sense from a business side, Reedy said, they wanted things to work for the employees too as this is a working classroom of sorts. And as much care and consideration was spent on the designs of the so-called front of the house, Katherine Reedy, foundation lead designer of the House Three Thirty, said an equal amount of effort was spent designing the behind-the-scenes areas. The LeBron James’ Home Court− a walk through museum of LeBron’s life − will open in June. And like its predecessor − the Tangier − the aptly named House Three Thirty (so named for the area code) will be a spot for families to gather and create memories.

Akron gets a first look at LeBron James' 'House Three Thirty'

The Senate on Tuesday night passed a package to deliver $95 billion in foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan -- a bipartisan win months in the making. Davinport is the mother to a previous I Promise Program student and has spent the last eight weeks training in the facility's kitchens. She's learned everything from how to properly cut chicken and fish to ways to cook steaks and vegetables. "We're offering them the ability to come into a safe space where they feel comfortable, that they can receive resources," he said.

One of the first exhibits guest will encounter will be a replica of the apartment his family called home in Akron's Spring Hill neighborhood. "The severity of this moment cannot be overstated. If we do not continue to support Ukraine, Ukraine could lose," he said. The package now heads to President Joe Biden's desk where he said in a statement that he will sign it Wednesday. Sundae Davinport, a barista at House Three Thirty's Starbucks, said that the family atmosphere of the place has given her a reason to wake up in the morning and be happy to go to work. "We want people to come in here and feel the love and happiness when they walk in," adds Michele Campbell, the executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation.

The Sweet Shop will house local companies’ goods — Mitchell’s Ice Cream, Metropolis Gourmet Popcorn, NORKA Beverages and Malley’s Chocolates Z — and offer training opportunities in retail sales. Because House Three Thirty is designed as a workforce-training facility, much of its design is to support workers. Much of the building is still under construction, with an anticipated January 2023 opening, said Campbell. She can tell you the specific use for each room or area in the facility, and the thought process behind the designs, which were created by foundation staffer Katherine Reedy.

Inside, people can watch performances, participate in games, grab food or a coffee from a number of different shops, and learn about finances at the Chase bank within the building. Training is underway for the Taco Shop by Old El Paso, the PepsiCo Foundation Training Kitchen, the Smucker Hometown Hall for public and private events, the one-of-a-kind LeBron James Sports Bar and other training areas. On Thursday, attendees will have access to maps of House Three Thirty to enable them explore the site at their leisure, possibly finding special entrances to hidden rooms, the foundation said. The Smucker Hometown Hall will be a private and community events space, while a wine room and a den will host smaller gatherings. The Old El Paso Taco Shop will enable Taco Tuesdays at House Three Thirty. With large windows to see into the kitchen, the restaurant also has a training kitchen for workers, Campbell said.

It also has hosted events for the foundation, including a gathering for Akron school teens during NBA All-Star Week in Cleveland. Like the other venues inside the House Three Thirty that includes a Starbucks and a gift shop, proceeds from the museum will benefit those who are part of the foundation's job and career training programs. In the back space, Reedy said, there's also an in-house barber and beauty shop where workers can get a free haircut or style. Campbell said from a practical standpoint it allows flexibility in scheduling and staffing but also offers hand's on experience to a variety of potential career paths. The reason for not opening everything at once, Campbell said, was so the workers can get used to working in the space and more employees can be trained in the coming days and months as new amenities are added. On the first day, the Starbucks Community Store where guests can order drinks and buy some treats along with the retail shop that sells branded merchandise and items from Akron artists and entrepreneurs will be open.
